黃博士的學術興趣十分廣泛，本科主修工商管理，副修中國語文及文學，碩士轉攻語言研究，其後在香港科技大學參與知網語料庫的研究，並加入了語言科技公司，因而對計算機語言學有基礎的認識。他在香港大學語言學系攻讀博士，研究基於知網的語義標注中文語料庫，對普通話、粵語、英語的對比分析尤感興趣。博士畢業後，他在大專院校教授中國語文科，廣涉中國文化、文學和語言學的範疇。工作之餘，他持續研習語文，考獲了日本語能力試驗N2級、普通話水平測試二級甲等成績。黃博士是中國象棋的愛好者，除了參加全港中國象棋比賽，還舉辦賽事，在大專院校教過中國象棋科，以推廣中國文化。

除了一般中文科，他也教授內地生廣州話、非華語學生的中文課程。
