English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Level Two

Introduction

Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE) is commissioned by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) with a grant from the Language Fund to launch the "English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers – Level Two" in the 2022/23 school year.

Objectives

  1. Boosting the confidence and competencies of kindergarten teachers and principals in pedagogies of exposing young children to English in integrated/thematic approach.
  2. Creating a platform for kindergarten teachers and principals to share practices and experiences as well as to exchange knowledge with respect to English language exposure of young children.

Entry Requirements

Participants should

  1. be registered teachers with local Qualified Kindergarten Teacher qualification, or its equivalent;
  2. have attained Level 2 (HKDSE) / Grade E (HKCEE Syllabus B) or above in English Language, or the equivalent.
  3. have successfully completed English Language Enhancement Programme for Kindergarten Teachers - Level One.

Remarks: Applicants are requested to provide photocopies of the above qualification proofs when submitting application.

Programme Design

This is a sequel to the Level One Course, which is also the pre-requisite for admission to this Course. This therefore assumes that the participants have already acquired a certain measure of English proficiency to function usefully in enabling and facilitating their young students in the kindergarten setting and environment to grow and develop their oral language skills and literacy. This Course provides participants an opportunity to demonstrate in micro-teaching sessions how well they have internalised and mastered the strategies for achieving such outcomes, and to share their experiences and observations with each other in focus group discussions. (This is fully echoed in 2.6.2(b) Learning Area: Second Language (English), as well as in Appendix 4, in the Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide 2017.)

 Detailed content and topics to be covered in the Programme:

(i)      Focus training (28 hours) on two effective English language teaching strategies for developing young children's oracy and literacy in English as a second/foreign language, such as Storytelling, Shared Reading, and related developmentally appropriate English language activities for young children.

(ii)     Two three-hour experience sharing sessions for participants to report on and share their observations/experiences in planning and trials of the English language teaching strategies in their classrooms which they have learned in the Programme.
