Physiotherapist Student Promoted Fall Risk and Sarcopenia Screening to Community

02 Oct 2023

CIHE, Hong Kong Physiotherapist' Union (HKPU), and Chung Sing Benevolent Society organised a community promotion cum sarcopenia screening day for the elderly in Kwun Tong and Shum Shui Po.

Fourteen-eight students from CIHE's Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physiotherapy Programme led by three from the HKPU organised a Fall Risk and Sarcopenia Screening Day on 2 October.  Fall risk assessments and sarcopenia screening were conducted on 200 elderlies in the communities.

Sarcopenia can be assessed through calf circumference. Males with a circumference below 34 cm and females below 33 cm, along with other criteria like sit-to-stand ability within 12 seconds, may indicate an increased risk of sarcopenia.

The test found that 24% of the elderlies may have a higher risk of having sarcopenia, while 9.6 % & 25 % of the elderlies were found, which is higher than expected.

Dr Tiffany CHOI, Associate Professor of Practice from CIHE's School of Health Sciences, and Dr Terry TING, UK registered dietitian also provided health promotion talks relating to sarcopenia and related dietic suggestions.
