Research / Project Positions

Research Assistant (Ref.: 23/020/CIS/RA)
Duties

The appointee will be responsible for assisting the research in one of the following FDS projects:

1) Deep Comic Screening via Tone-aware Semantic Layer Analysis [UGC/FDS11/E01/21]
2) Instance-aware Cartoon Stylization of Photo and Videos [UGC/FDS11/E02/21]
3) Chinese Calligraphic Animation Generation via Deep Stroke Segmentation and Contour-based Trajectory Identification [UGC/FDS11/E03/22]

 The tasks include preparing training dataset, implementing the designed algorithms, performing ablation and comparison experiments, and conducting user studies, etc.

 Appointment will be made on a contract basis for 6-12 months commencing at earliest convenience.

Appointment Criteria

Applicants should (i) have a bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Information Technology or related disciplines; (ii) have experience in deep learning or image processing research and be able to work independently; (iii) be able to develop deep learning applications using the deep learning libraries, e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.; and (iv) have good communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants with publication experience are preferred.

Research Assistant, School of Humanities and Languages (Ref.: 23/011/HL/RA)
Duties

The appointee will assist the research team in general administrative support and preparation of the questionnaires and organizing the focus group interview to collect quantitative and qualitative data from participants; data entry, data transcription and data analysis.

Appointment Criteria

Research Assistant, School of Computing and Information Sciences (Ref.: 23/012/CIS/RA)
Duties

The appointee will assist the Principal Investigator in the UGC funded project - "Chaotized Plasma for actively combating airborne COVID19"

The appointee will (i) perform bacteria test-culture preparation, bacteria collection, incubation, colony counting, and reporting; (ii) assemble electronic components into AC/DC electric fans; (iii) design plastic moulds by 3D printer and communicate to manufacturers for quantity production; (iv) in-situ test in care homes and record the body temperature and SPO2 for care home residents; (v) produce a platform to record the vital sign data; and (vi) program PCB for optimal motor speed.

Appointment Criteria

Applicants should (i) have a recognised Diploma/Bachelor Degree in a medical-related field, with post-graduate degree in Information Technology is highly preferred; (ii) have strong and relevant experience and knowledge in IOT and AI programming; (iii) good experience in care home services is an advantage; and (iv) have good communication skills and fluency in English and Chinese.

School of Humanities and Languages

Duties

The appointee is required to assist in research project 'Promotion of Holistic Health Studies in Higher Education: Efficacy of BMS intervention and association factors of holistic health'. The research tasks include literature review, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data entry, data analysis, relevant arrangements of focus groups and in-depth interviews, and other relevant administrative tasks.  Appointment will be made on a contract basis.

Project Officer (with counselling background) (Ref.: 22/112/SAO/PO)
Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for (a) assisting the research Principal Investigator (Project Director) in the administration and implementation of a Body-Mind-Spirit (BMS) services component under a BMS Research Matching Grant Project;  (b) connect and coordinate with internal and external Body-Mind-Spirit Practitioners to conduct workshops and seminars; (c)  work closely with the research assistant in collecting research data, (d) attend research meetings and data analysis meetings; and (e) other duties as assigned.

Appointment Criteria

Applicants should (a) have a recognised bachelor's degree or above qualification in social work or counselling; (b) be a  Registered Social Worker or a member of the Hong Kong Professional Counselling Association; (c) have at least 3 years of relevant experience in body-mind-spirt intervention for social service organization or school setting in Hong Kong; (d) have a mature and pleasant personality with good team spirit, communication skills and interpersonal relationship, be proactive in work and able to work independently, efficiently and responsibly; (e) have a good command of both spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua); and (f) be proficient in computer skills.

Duties The appointee is required to conduct research project related to the mechanisms involved in feeding and general homeostasis as secondary measures affected by nausea and vomiting. Research Assistant: Applicants should have a) a bachelor's degree or master's degree in relevant fields; b) familiarity with database management tools (such as SQL, MS Access, etc.); (c) knowledge of programming tools (such as Python and C++) would be a plus; d) have good communication skills and sense of responsibility.

Duties

The appointee is required to assist the following projects:

(i) Creating an Automatic Football Commentary System with Image Recognition and Cantonese Voice Output (UGC/IDS(C)11/E01/20)

(ii) Deep Learning Baseline Design for Image to Image Processing (ISG200206)

(iii) Deep Learning Based Face Super-Resolution: for Small and Incomplete Images (UGC/FDS/E05/22)

 All three projects involve academic and industrial values, and heavy study of Machine Learning technologies, including Deep Learning for engineering and scientific applications. The applicant must be interested in Machine Learning, with background and interest in Signal Processing, Video and Image Processing, Computer Vision and good at Python programming. Applicants who are good at C++ and/or with GUI programming knowledge will certainly have advantage

Duties

Appointees taking up these Research and Development projects will (i) conduct Research and Development work on the production of demonstration systems at industrial standard and also produce high-level research papers in international academic journals, on the above topics.

 The first project is on Research and Development of Machine Learning Technologies for Automatic Football Commentary Systems. The second project is on an investigation of the basic theory of Deep Learning, and the third project is on the super-resolution and enlargement of small image (including human faces) to high quality image faces. All projects involve heavy Phyton programming, and deep learning investigations with two or more of the following topics: convolutional neural networks (CNN), generative adversarial networks (GAN), transformer networks, diffusion models, prior and latent space analysis.

Appointment Criteria

For Research Fellow (at the level of assistant professor in research), applicants should have (i) PhD degrees in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or in related areas with the ability to conduct research independently in the above subject areas, (ii) strong technical English writing skills as evidenced by prior technical publications and (iii) good presentation skills as evidenced by prior experience to present technical papers.

 For Research Associate / Research Assistant, applicants should have (i) master degree or bachelor honours degree in Computer Science or Engineering with studied subject areas in the above topics, (ii) strong intention to become a professional in Machine Learning.

 

Note

(1) For PhD holders with less experience in the subject area or without a good related publication record may join initially as Research Associate.

(2) Appropriate candidates with a bachelor or master degree may be supported by the Institute to register for a PhD degree with a local or overseas university.

The appointee is required to work as a team member in conducting research studies within the School of Social Sciences. Duties include data collection and analysis, report writing and other related responsibilities as required. The appointee should be able to work independently and communicate in English and Chinese.

Appointment Criteria

Applicants should possess at least a degree in social science or relevant disciplines. Candidate with suitable qualification and relevant experience may be appointed at a higher rank. Preference will be given to candidate possesses a higher qualification; has knowledge and research skills in both quantitative and qualitative research, and/or has relevant research experience.

 

Appointment will be made on contract basis, which may be renewed thereafter subject to funds available.
